Day 29 (7/23) Owatonna, MN to Winona, MN

A beautiful rainbow after the rain!

the famous Mayo Clinic - Rochester, MN

91.32 miles
14.7 mph average
It was still pouring when we woke up this morning. It was really hard to get out of our sleeping bags, I wanted to stay curled up in bed and listen to the rain as I dozed off back to sleep...but no we had 91 miles ahead of us and the only way to get there was pedaling. Luckily it stopped raining just in time for us to load our gear onto the truck, eat breakfast and get on the road. As soon as we were on the road it started again though. I rained pretty hard for a while, but then stopped and although the sky looked like it could dump on us at any minute, it held out for the rest of the day. I got some great pictures of a rainbow just after the rain stopped. It was great riding today, rolling hills that were varied and pretty easy. The wind wasn't bad either. I rode alone most of the day, but then joined Greg Sterling and later David. Greg and I chatted the whole way, he's great to talk to. After a while it bacame too dangerous to be riding 2 abreast though, there wasn't a good shoulder and the traffic was not very bike friendly. Today we rode through Ane and Liz's hometown of Rochester, MN (home to the Mayo Clinic). Their families put out an amazing water stop for us. Ane's Dad is a baker and make strawberry rhubarb crisp and rhubarb and apple pies. There were peanut butter rice crispy treats and tons of fresh fruit. It was a wonderful treat and great to chat with their families. I rode past the Mayo Clinic at St. Mary's Hospital. Pollie's parents and younger sister also came to see us today. Her Dad decided to stay on with us as support for the rest of the ride to replace Anne. We had a great 2 mile + downhill at the end of our ride as we descended into the Mississippi River valley. Unfortunately, the roads were really bad and cracked though, so the going was rough. We were given the rare opportunity to stay in dorms tonight, on a NON rest day, that was a huge treat! We stayed at Winona University. Winona is a great little college town on the Mississippi. Just across the river is Wisconsin.
